HIFU in Penang

HIFU may be considered for mild to moderate skin laxity affecting the face, jawline, or neck, although suitability depends on facial structure, volume, fat distribution, and treatment goals. At A.M Clinic Jelutong, Penang, consultation begins with a registered, LCP-certified aesthetic physician who assesses these factors before recommending HIFU or other appropriate options.

What is HIFU?

HIFU delivers focused ultrasound energy to controlled depths beneath the skin, commonly around 1.5mm, 3.0mm and 4.5mm. The deepest of these reaches the SMAS, the layer of tissue a surgeon addresses in a facelift. The energy creates small, controlled thermal points beneath the skin surface, stimulating a natural collagen response over the following weeks. The intended effect, for a suitable candidate, is gradual tightening and improved contour definition.

What HIFU does not do is replicate a surgical facelift. Where laxity is advanced, where skin has descended substantially, or where there is significant skin redundancy, focused ultrasound cannot reproduce what surgery achieves by removing and repositioning tissue. Pages promising a dramatic lift or a guaranteed V-shape are describing a different procedure, or an outcome nobody can promise.

HIFU results are not immediate for everyone. Some individuals may notice mild tightening soon after treatment, while changes may continue to develop over several weeks as a collagen response occurs. The duration of results can vary depending on factors such as age, skin condition, lifestyle and individual response. Outcomes differ from person to person and cannot be guaranteed.

HIFU and Facial Fat Loss: What Patients Should Know

HIFU delivered at deeper focal depths affects subcutaneous fat as well as the collagen layer. In a patient with a full lower face, some fat reduction beneath the chin may be part of the intended effect. In a slim patient, or an older patient who has already lost mid-face volume, the same energy can leave the face looking hollowed or gaunt, which is not easily reversed and was not the goal. This is why facial fat distribution is assessed before treatment, and why we sometimes advise against HIFU.

HIFU is not suitable for every face. Its suitability depends on factors such as facial structure, volume distribution, skin condition and treatment goals. A consultation with a qualified doctor helps determine whether HIFU is an appropriate option for your concerns.

HIFU vs. Surgical Facelift: Setting Realistic Expectations

The phrase non-surgical facelift is useful shorthand and misleading if taken literally. HIFU reaches the same SMAS layer a surgeon works on, and it produces lift by stimulating your own collagen rather than by cutting. The mechanism is genuinely different, the magnitude of change is smaller, and the result is temporary.

For the right candidate, none of that is a drawback. A gradual, moderate lift with no incision, no anaesthesia and no downtime is exactly what many patients in their late thirties and forties want. For a patient with advanced laxity, the same treatment produces a disappointing result at meaningful cost, and the honest recommendation is a different one. Distinguishing between the two is the purpose of the consultation, and it is why we assess before we quote.

Areas commonly treated

  • Jawline and jowls, for definition of the lower face.
  • Cheeks and mid-face, for support and softening of the folds from nose to mouth.
  • Brow, for a modest lift of the upper face.
  • Neck, for laxity and the appearance of banding.
  • Submental area, beneath the chin.
  • Body areas, where the concern is skin laxity rather than fat volume.

HIFU Treatment: Ideal Candidates and Considerations

HIFU may be suitable, following assessment, if

  • You have mild to moderate facial or neck laxity
  • You are broadly in your thirties to fifties and wish to slow visible ageing
  • You want gradual, moderate change without surgery or downtime
  • You have pigmented skin and prefer a treatment that works beneath the surface
  • You are able to attend a review appointment
  • You understand the result is temporary and maintenance may be discussed

HIFU may not be appropriate if

  • You have significant skin redundancy or advanced descent, where a surgical opinion may be more appropriate
  • You have little facial fat and are concerned about volume loss, since HIFU can reduce facial fat
  • You require a defined result by a fixed date, since change develops over weeks
  • You have an active skin infection, open lesion or inflammatory condition in the treatment area
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have a history of facial nerve injury, Bell’s palsy or a relevant neurological condition
This list is not exhaustive and does not replace an examination. Disclose your full medical history, all medications and supplements, and any previous aesthetic treatment in the area, including fillers and threads.

Risks and Side Effects

The Ministry of Health’s guidance on aesthetic medical practice states that aesthetic medicine is not risk-free, however it may be perceived. We take the same view. No clinic can guarantee an outcome or the absence of a complication, and any page describing HIFU as risk-free or as safe for absolutely everyone is overstating the position.

Common and expected

  • Redness, mild swelling or a warm, tingling sensation during and shortly after treatment.
  • Tenderness to the touch, sometimes for several days, particularly along the jaw.
  • A transient sensation of tightness.

Uncommon

  • Bruising, particularly on the neck.
  • Temporary numbness or altered sensation.
  • Small areas of prolonged swelling.

Uncommon but significant

  • Unwanted facial fat loss. Discussed in full above. The reason we assess fat distribution before treating.
  • Nerve irritation or temporary muscle weakness, where energy reaches a nerve pathway. Practitioners trained in facial anatomy avoid defined regions of the face for this reason.
  • Burns or blistering, uncommon, and associated with excessive energy or an unverified device.

Contact the clinic promptly if you develop blistering, an area of unusual pain, facial weakness or drooping, or any change that does not settle within a few days. Do not wait for your review appointment.

The Device and How to Check It Yourself

HIFU platforms are medical devices. Under the Medical Device Act 2012, no medical device may be imported, sold or used in Malaysia without registration with the Medical Device Authority, and enforcement reaches healthcare facilities as well as importers. Counterfeit and unregistered HIFU devices exist, and because they are unregulated their energy output, delivery depth and calibration are unverified, which raises the risk of burns, uneven results and nerve injury. Ask these questions of any Penang clinic, including this one.

  • Which HIFU platform is used, and who manufactures it? Ask to see it.
  • Is it registered with the Medical Device Authority? Registered devices can be checked on the publicly searchable Malaysia Medical Device Register.
  • Who performs the treatment: a registered medical practitioner, or a therapist? If a doctor, are they LCP-certified and listed on the National Registry?
  • Is the premises registered under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998, and is the premises licence number displayed?
  • How many lines or shots does the quoted price include, and at which depths?

In Malaysia, medical HIFU may lawfully be performed only by a registered medical practitioner holding a Letter of Credentialling and Privileging (LCP), with current Malaysian Medical Council registration and a valid Annual Practising Certificate, in premises registered under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998. The Ministry of Health confirmed in 2024 that aesthetic procedures performed in beauty centres without LCP-certified doctors are unlawful under section 33 of the Medical Act 1971. This matters in Penang, where HIFU is also offered in non-medical, mall-based settings.

We will tell you which platform we use, who manufactures it, and its Medical Device Authority registration number. You are welcome to check it yourself on the public register, and we would encourage you to ask every clinic you are considering the same question.

Recovery and Realistic Timeline

  • Immediately after

Temporary effects after HIFU may include redness and a warm sensation in the treated area. Some individuals may notice mild tightening after treatment. Recovery experiences vary, and many people are able to resume their usual activities on the same day.

  • Days 1 to 3

Tenderness to the touch, particularly along the jaw. Mild swelling, noticeable to you and rarely to others.

  • Week 1

Resume light activity once tenderness settles. Avoid saunas, steam rooms and vigorous facial massage.

  • Weeks 2 to 4

Avoid facials and deep facial massage in the treated area for around two weeks. Daily sunscreen, which matters in Penang’s year-round sun.

  • Weeks 8 to 12

Collagen response develops gradually, and visible changes may vary between individuals.

  • Months 12 to 18

Results typically begin to soften as aging continues. Maintenance may be discussed at review.

  • Before an event

For a wedding or fixed date, schedule months ahead. HIFU is not a treatment to have in the week before a photograph.

Find out whether HIFU is right for your face

A consultation with one of our doctors at Jalan Masjid Negeri takes around 20 minutes. You will leave understanding your degree of laxity, whether HIFU addresses it, whether your face has the fat to spare, and what a personalised plan would involve. If another treatment would serve you better, we will tell you.

What Influences the Cost of HIFU Treatment in Malaysia

HIFU pricing varies widely across Penang and the variation is usually explicable. We do not publish a price list, because a figure quoted before anyone has examined your face is a guess, and because HIFU priced purely by the number of lines encourages delivering lines you may not need. Your written quotation follows your assessment.

Variable Effect on cost
Number of lines or shots HIFU is delivered in discrete lines. A full-face treatment commonly requires several hundred to over a thousand. A markedly cheaper session is often a session with markedly fewer lines.
Depths treated Treating at multiple depths requires multiple cartridges, which are consumables with a finite number of shots.
Area and number of areas Full face, full face and neck, submental only, or a body area. Body areas require more energy.
Device class Registered medical-grade platforms cost more to acquire, service and calibrate than beauty-grade equipment.
Who performs it Assessment and treatment by a registered, LCP-certified medical practitioner.
Maintenance Discussed at review, based on how your collagen responded, not committed to in advance.

Payment methods accepted: Visa, Mastercard, bank transfer, Atome, ShopeePay, Touch ‘n Go eWallet, GrabPay and Alipay.
Insurance: HIFU is an elective aesthetic procedure. It is not covered by medical insurance in Malaysia, and A.M Clinic does not work with insurance panels for aesthetic treatment.

HIFU vs Thread Lift vs INDIBA vs Injectables: Matching the Tool to the Problem

Laxity, volume loss and skin quality are different problems that respond to different instruments. A clinic that owns only a HIFU machine will find a way to recommend it. A.M Clinic offers several, so the recommendation can follow the diagnosis rather than the equipment.

Treatment Addresses Broad considerations
HIFU Mild to moderate laxity of the face, neck and submental area Non-invasive, gradual change over 8 to 12 weeks, typically lasting 12 to 18 months. Can reduce facial fat, which is not always wanted.
Thread lift Moderate descent requiring mechanical repositioning Minimally invasive. Immediate repositioning plus a collagen response. Involves entry points and recovery.
INDIBA Skin quality, circulation and recovery Non-invasive and cumulative. Often a supportive rather than a primary lifting treatment.
Injectables Volume loss, and lines caused by muscle movement A deflated face may need volume, not lifting. A different problem from laxity.
Surgical referral Significant redundancy or advanced descent Where no non-surgical option will give the result the patient describes, we say so.

Your Consultation and Assessment

  • Consultation with a registered doctor. Your goals, medical history, medications and previous aesthetic treatment, including fillers and threads, are reviewed.
  • Facial assessment. Degree of laxity, tissue descent, facial fat distribution and skin quality are examined. This decides whether HIFU is the right instrument, and at what depths.
  • Honest recommendation. If HIFU is unlikely to please you, or if your face lacks the fat to spare, we will say so and discuss alternatives available at this clinic, or refer you.
  • Personalised plan and written quotation. Areas, depths and number of lines. The quotation follows the plan.
  • Treatment, under doctor supervision, with topical anaesthetic where appropriate and comfort checks throughout.
  • Review as collagen remodels over the following weeks. Maintenance is discussed then, not assumed at booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can HIFU cause facial fat loss?

It can. Energy delivered at the deeper focal depths affects fat as well as the collagen layer. Beneath a full chin that may be part of the intended effect. In a slim face, or one that has already lost mid-face volume, the same energy can produce a hollowed appearance that was not wanted and is not easily reversed. This is why facial fat distribution is assessed before treatment, and one of the reasons we sometimes advise against HIFU. Be cautious of any clinic presenting HIFU’s fat effect as a benefit for everyone.

Is HIFU safe?

When performed by a qualified medical practitioner using a registered medical-grade platform, HIFU procedures generally carry a favorable safety profile under appropriate clinical precautions. However, aesthetic medicine is not risk-free. Common effects include temporary redness and tenderness, while less common risks include nerve branch irritation, temporary muscle weakness, or unintended fat depletion. These risks are minimized through proper anatomical mapping, registered platforms, and patient selection.

How long does HIFU last?

Results commonly last in the region of twelve to eighteen months. HIFU stimulates your own collagen, which builds over roughly eight to twelve weeks and then gradually softens as ageing continues. Longevity depends on your age, skin condition, sun exposure and lifestyle. HIFU is not permanent, and maintenance is discussed at review rather than committed to at booking.

How soon will I see results?

Some individuals may notice mild tightening after treatment. Changes may appear gradually as collagen response develops over time. Outcomes vary depending on individual factors and cannot be guaranteed.

Is HIFU a non-surgical facelift?

It is often described that way, and the shorthand is useful because HIFU reaches the SMAS layer a surgeon addresses. The mechanism is different, the change is smaller, and the result is temporary. HIFU can improve mild to moderate laxity. It cannot reproduce what surgery achieves by removing and repositioning tissue, and where laxity is advanced we will say so rather than promise a lift we cannot deliver.

Does HIFU work for a double chin?

It depends on the underlying cause. Fullness beneath the chin may be related to fat, skin laxity, or a combination of both. Your physician will assess the area and discuss whether HIFU or another suitable treatment approach may be appropriate for your concerns.

Does HIFU hurt?

Some individuals may experience warmth or brief pricking sensations during HIFU treatment. The level of sensation may vary depending on the treatment area and settings used. Comfort measures may be provided where appropriate, and patients should inform their practitioner if they experience any concerns during the procedure.

Is HIFU safe for darker or Asian skin tones?

HIFU delivers focused ultrasound energy beneath the skin surface and does not target surface pigmentation. Skin type, treatment area and individual concerns are considered during assessment to determine whether HIFU is suitable.

How do I know the clinic’s HIFU device is genuine?

Ask which platform is used and who manufactures it. Ask for its Medical Device Authority registration number and check it on the Malaysia Medical Device Register, which is publicly searchable. Counterfeit and unregistered HIFU devices are unregulated, their energy delivery is unverified, and they raise the risk of burns and uneven results. A clinic that will not answer this has answered it. This matters in Penang, where HIFU is also offered in non-medical, mall-based settings.

Who is legally allowed to perform HIFU in Malaysia?

Only a registered medical practitioner holding a Letter of Credentialling and Privileging, with current Malaysian Medical Council registration and a valid Annual Practising Certificate, in premises registered under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998. The Ministry of Health confirmed in 2024 that aesthetic procedures performed in beauty centres without LCP-certified doctors are unlawful under section 33 of the Medical Act 1971. You can verify a doctor on the National Registry.

Where is your HIFU clinic in Penang?

A.M Clinic is at 88-N Jalan Masjid Negeri, Taman Greenview, 11600 Jelutong, George Town, on the road widely known as Green Lane. How much does HIFU cost in Penang?

Advertised prices vary widely, and the variation reflects the number of lines delivered, the depths treated, the class of device and who performs the treatment. We do not publish a price list, because a figure quoted before anyone has examined your face is a guess, and because HIFU priced purely by the line encourages delivering lines you may not need. You receive a written, personalised quotation following your assessment.

Do men have HIFU at A.M Clinic?

Yes. Jawline definition and tightening beneath the chin are common concerns among male patients. Suitability is assessed based on factors such as facial structure, skin condition and volume distribution to determine an appropriate treatment approach.

Why Patients Choose A.M Clinic in Penang

What we do What that means for you
Doctor-led assessment Your suitability, depths and plan are determined by a registered, LCP-certified aesthetic physician, not by a package you selected online or a promotion at a counter.
We name the fat-loss risk others sell as a benefit HIFU can thin a slim face. We assess your facial fat before treating, and we will tell you if HIFU is likely to hollow rather than lift.
Honest candidacy We will tell you if HIFU is unlikely to give you a result you would be pleased with, including when the honest answer is a surgical opinion elsewhere.
Anatomy-trained clinicians Dr Hannan practised as a medical officer in anaesthesiology at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Depth, energy and nerve anatomy are not marketing language to him.
Device transparency We tell you the platform, its Medical Device Authority registration number, and how to verify it yourself. In a market where HIFU is also sold in malls, that matters.
A treatment ladder, not one machine Thread lift, INDIBA, injectables and Pico Laser are available in the same clinic, so the recommendation can follow the diagnosis rather than the equipment.
Assessment before quotation We do not price a face we have not examined. Your written quotation specifies areas, depths and number of lines.
Registered practice MMC-registered, LCP-certified physicians in premises registered under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998.
